At some point, though, we have to acknowledge that we choose the people we hang around with. And often because they keep us in roles we’re cosy with, even if they don’t make us happy

There is this feeling you get when you’re driving a friend’s car or staying in a hotel. It is less stressful, easier. All the things and baggage you’ve allowed to accumulate in your actual life don’t seem to be there.

I kind of get where this guys is coming from, I like the idea of the "Present Moment" being a state of mind we put ourselves in but I don't agree that it's as easy as putting this state of mind to action every day. You can't be careless about spending money on petrol, or buying a nicer, more expensive thing all the time. You have to choose your battles and use a bit of self control.

If you stayed in a hotel every day for a few years, or used a friend's car for as long, I'm confident that the "gift of the present moment" would not be nearly as prominent.

Sometimes I do tend to 'like' something on Facebook when I'm feeling too lazy to actually write a comment, or perhaps sometimes when the person isn't particularly close, but they have a somewhat important announcement.

Sun, 10 Jul 2011 14:58:00 -0700 Intuitive eating http://itsamario-quotes.posterous.com/intuitive-eating http://itsamario-quotes.posterous.com/intuitive-eating
If you really think about how complex intra and extracellular water and electrolyte balance is – a complex process moderated by everything from our thyroid gland to our kidneys, you realize right away that this intuitive urge to dilute concentrated salt with water only minutes after ingestion is absolutely astounding. It’s a strong indication of just how fine-tuned our bodies are, and how masterful they are about controlling our involuntary urge to drink.

Kind of gives a whole new meaning to 'these pretzels are making me thirsty'.

Wed, 06 Jul 2011 06:32:00 -0700 Wrong choice http://itsamario-quotes.posterous.com/wrong-choice http://itsamario-quotes.posterous.com/wrong-choice

When you find a lone nut doing something great, have the guts to be the first person to stand up and join in.

I came across this page when reading an article about the overwhelming fear of being wrong. Both make a lot of sense. The former looks at a leader / follower scenario and highlights the pivotal role of the first follower while the latter notes people's indecision as a result of their fear of making the wrong choice.

I hate the idea of there being a 'wrong' choice.

Tue, 05 Jul 2011 01:13:00 -0700 (Don't) toss your expectations into the ocean http://itsamario-quotes.posterous.com/dont-toss-your-expectations-into-the-ocean http://itsamario-quotes.posterous.com/dont-toss-your-expectations-into-the-ocean
Take your expectations, and throw them in the ocean.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't take this idea seriously... unless of course when referring to a film. If I'm about to watch a film I try to clear my mind of reviews I've read and comments friends have made, otherwise I run the risk of being disappointed due to incredibly outrageous expectations (Insidious, I'm looking at you!).

But when it comes to people and plans I like to have certain expectations. Perhaps there are certain scenarios where it is not possible, but I think it's against our very nature to deny ourselves these expectations.

I do, however, also believe in the saying 'man proposes, God disposes' so I am not one who will create an illusion that my expectations will come to fruition.

I also understand that people who have had their hearts broken might feel that denying themselves these expectations will decrease disappointment, and perhaps it will, but you're effectively denying yourself part of the experience.

“Everyone sits in the prison of his own ideas. A human being is a part of the whole called by us “Universe,” a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

– Albert Einstein

"Why would anyone care where I am or what I am doing?"  Besides, I don't really know how to twitter.

"You're thinking about twitter all wrong," he says.  "Twitter is about influence.  You don't tell people that you're eating a hamburger right now.  You tell people that you're eating the best hamburger, and you give information about where and how they can eat the best hamburger as well.  You're influencing others with good information."

I get annoyed when people dismiss Twitter as people telling others what they ate for lunch.

Sat, 02 Jul 2011 03:18:00 -0700 Why Do Some Songs Stick in Our Minds Forever? http://itsamario-quotes.posterous.com/why-do-some-songs-stick-in-our-minds-forever http://itsamario-quotes.posterous.com/why-do-some-songs-stick-in-our-minds-forever
How and why are certain songs -- not necessarily our favorites -- seemingly imprinted on our brains? Why are songs we learn later in life -- even those we love -- less likely to imprint in the same way?

I must admit, I do find it slightly harder to connect with songs released more recently, compared with those released 5, 6 or even 15 years ago. Granted, I am only 27, but I certainly do notice a difference there.

Fri, 01 Jul 2011 23:13:00 -0700 Effortless Creation http://itsamario-quotes.posterous.com/effortless-creation http://itsamario-quotes.posterous.com/effortless-creation
Our most creative ideas come in unexpected moments. You might be in the shower, on a walk, or driving when that brilliant new idea hits you. In these moments, creation is effortless. There’s no strain, no effort, no real work. You can do in a matter of hours or even minutes what it might take weeks to do through “hard work.”

So the key question is: how can we experience more moments of “effortless creation”?

Tue, 28 Jun 2011 04:40:00 -0700 A Pro Tools plugin store: a novel idea http://itsamario-quotes.posterous.com/a-pro-tools-plugin-store-a-novel-idea http://itsamario-quotes.posterous.com/a-pro-tools-plugin-store-a-novel-idea

Usually when I request features, it’s something I want added to the Pro Tools application itself. Today is a little bit different.

I’m sitting here with my morning coffee, browsing the (relatively) new App Store – not the one for iPad and iPhone but for the Mac – and it’s quite simply brilliant. I’m browsing around for products I don’t know because it’s fun. I grab some freebie that I haven’t heard about. I buy something cheap because it sounds like a clever solution to a problem someone else haven’t thought about before.

Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a plugin store like this? It could be a separate app that installs with Pro Tools or it could be a simple link to a cleverly made website.

I completely agree!

Fri, 24 Jun 2011 06:09:00 -0700 The need for change bulldozed a road down the center of my mind http://itsamario-quotes.posterous.com/the-need-for-change-bulldozed-a-road-down-the http://itsamario-quotes.posterous.com/the-need-for-change-bulldozed-a-road-down-the

Why is it so hard to break free of a life that’s good enough to pursue the life we truly long for? We like to think these things are complicated, but the root cause is pretty simple: change is hard, so we tend to put it off until it becomes urgent. When the time comes to change, it becomes an overpowering presence; something that must be resolved one way or another. Maya Angelou put it this way:

The need for change bulldozed a road down the center of my mind.

It's even harder when you are unsure of exactly what it is that you want. I'm getting back on track, I just need a little time to figure it out.

Sun, 05 Jun 2011 23:18:00 -0700 Affectation http://itsamario-quotes.posterous.com/affectation http://itsamario-quotes.posterous.com/affectation

There's a saying "don't laugh at a youth for his affectations; he is only trying on one face after another to find his own", and, for me, this goes to the heart of the issue.

Affectations are usually put on by people searching for themselves - such as kids smoking cigarettes to look tough - so they reach for an archetype and hopefully later move on to something more genuine and healthy.

Sometimes, though, people don't move on and can become so affected, they veer into self-parody.

I have actually pondered this topic extensively & still haven't come to a decision. Sometimes I see some of these eccentricities played out & think 'each to their own,' and at other times 'wanker!'

We are all faced with the challenge of fitting in whilst still being an individual, and perhaps some people just aren't able to balance these things out. I don't think I've done a good job of it myself, perhaps that is why I flew through my years at school as if wearing Harry Potter's cloak of invisibility. I'd like to think I'm doing a better job of this balance now.

That's the essence right there - if you burn bridges in relationships, in business, in your family - you'd wanna win all your fights ahead of you, because you don't want to be coming back to ask for help from someone you've set on fire.

I've always jokingly told friends who are unhappy with their current place of employment that if and when they chose to leave they should quit 'in style'.

I must admit, I've been guilty of this 'one-upmanship' many a time.

Sometimes, whilst listening to another person's amazing story, I will remember one of my own, and this anecdote will slowly cloud my mind. I am no longer listening to story-A, as my mind is focussed on that moment when story-A has been told, so that I can chime in with my award-winning story-B.

I wonder how many anecdotes I've one-up'd in my life.

The art of conversation is pretty simple: you listen, then you ask questions, and it's bloody amazing where it leads you.

You get to know people's backgrounds, motives, attitudes, loves and hates, which are pretty handy knowledge as you navigate relationships.

A stunning thing also happens - the talker warms to you; they feel valued, because you're not immediately charging in with your attempt to diminish their experiences.
