Unpopular personal preference is less forgivable than institutionalised evil
"It is OK to take perfumed bribes from developers, wrest planning control from beyond the reach of the very people you represent, intimidate members of the public with the weight of your office and force others to commit perjury on your behalf, but such personal deviations as “cheating” on your wife, preferring sex with men or looking at pictures of people in the nude will get you sacked. Unpopular personal preference is less forgivable, it seems, than institutionalised evil."
